Varadero is the largest Caribbean resort today. It is located 140 km east of Havana at the end of Via Blanca, in the province of Matanzas. Although there has been a Cuban resort since 1872, international development began in the 1930s, when the American American chemist Irene Dupont Nemours built here a large mansion, including a golf course, a small airport and a small harbor for yachts. Her example was similar to other wealthy Americans, so Varadero slowly turned into a “hiding place” of millionaires. Even the leader of the Chicago Mafia, Al Capone used to spend his holidays here.
In March 1959, all private beaches became public, and since the mid-seventies Varadero hosted tens of thousands of Canadians and Western European tourists. One in three tourists visiting Cuba spends his holiday in Varadero. In recent years, many foreign companies have invested in the construction of huge hotel complexes along the eastern peninsula. Varadero is an ideal destination for those who want to enjoy the sun, the blue-green sea, the white sand, stretching for 20 km in the northern part of the island and of course all that is combined with them (water sports etc.).
